Blog 16: Reborn & Returning Home

By Denise Rudolph Ecenroad Friday evening, May 20,2016, I walked into Monmouth Museum in Lincroft NJ. There with its original boldness, under lights showcasing their bright passionate colors, was a sampling of my late brother Lewis Lanza Rudolph’s abstract paintings. Four decades of work, a retrospective art exhibit. There was a catch in my throat as I realized the homecoming was happening for Lewis. Our hope was now reality. We had accomplished returning his paintings to his home area in Monmouth County, NJ. From a dirt floor garage and a dusty attic his art work had been brought back to…

Blog 15: The Homecoming

The journey of seeing my brother Lewis Lanza Rudolph’s art recognized, exhibited and shared continues to be a long journey. You might recall Lewis passed away in October of 2012 over three years ago. My husband Bruce and I brought Lewis’s art collection home with us to PA after selling his house and closing out his estate. When Mulberry Art Studio welcomed my family and I with a tribute exhibit of our brother’s paintings in 2014 I hoped it would result in open doors and opportunities to see his abstract artwork released. It has resulted in other open doors, but…

Blog 14: Closing Our First Open Door

Time to hit a rest stop on our journey to releasing my brother’s paintings.  We have wrapped up our first ever posthumous exhibit, “My Brothers Legacy” at Mulberry Art Studios. The question most people ask is, “Did you sell any paintings?” While the answer is yes, more importantly we experienced our first opportunity to share my brother Lewis and his paintings with the public.  As we close this first door I take pause and recommit to my mission to see my brother Lewis recognized for life’s commitment to abstract art.  If I had accepted the numerous bids on Lewis’s paintings I could have…

Blog 13 – First Exhibit On My Journey with Lewis’s Art: Opening Reception

What a great experience! The opening reception was last Friday the 1st of August at Mulberry Art Studio in Lancaster, PA.  Meeting the guests was my favorite part.  Meeting local art collectors and hearing their comments and encouragement about Lewis’s abstract art was a wonderful experience.  Over 200 people visited the exhibit the first night. Nine gallons of Ice tea and six pounds of cheese later it was over. I am so glad we have not only a second reception on Friday the 15th of August but a third reception on Friday the 22nd of August both 5 PM- 9PM.  I have been told people have stopped in…

Blog 11 – My Brother’s Surrealist Vision has become my Reality

It is here! The Exhibit, My Brother’s Legacy opening at Mulberry Art Studios August 1st . Now, set up and ready for its public reveal. We often quote Lewis’s statement that he wrote about his paintings. “The paintings I paint are surrealistic visions”- today, I am living the reality of his visions. On Sunday July 27th Bruce and I , our daughters Faith and Joy and son Peter along with their spouses and our teenage granddaughter Jada, lent muscle to moving and transporting Lewis’s paintings selected by curator/ art director April Koppenhaver to her downtown gallery on Mulberry Street in…

Blog 10 – Bonding with the Paintings

It took time for me to fall in love with the art. Is that a surprise? When Lewis and I were teenagers growing up in Red Bank NJ with our two sisters, I loved my brothers realistic painting style. Lew and I were both in high school at that time. I remember his being commissioned to paint two paintings of a scene from a local family’s vacation in Italy. He used a photo they had taken as his reference for the paintings. Lew was not a fan of being assigned what to paint. He completed those paintings at mother’s insistence….

Blog 9 – An Action-Packed Month in the Journey

Ask Seek Knock What an emotional month. The Opening of our exhibit at Mulberry Art Studios A Brothers Legacy 4 Decades of Art is poised to open in about a one month. I have had the thought that the exhibit will be set up and no one will come visit. Will there be enough publicity? Life has taught me that sometimes we simply have to ask, seek and knock. Isn’t that what I did the day I walked down gallery row in Lancaster over one year ago? Recently, I wrote emails to two newspapers with no response . No assurance…

Blog 8 – Finding Ellen Sragow

Finding Ellen Sragow has been another marker on the journey to my brother’s legacy. Using an old invitation card from an exhibit Lewis presented at Sragow Gallery in New York City in the 1980’s, I was able to research and locate Ellen Sragow. Ellen was not only a “fan” of my brother Lewis, but through her correspondences, I have come to realize Ellen was my brothers New York City Art Dealer in the 1980’s. In one of her first emails Ellen wrote, “When I showed Lewis works I felt he was one of the best abstract painters I had seen…

Blog 7 – First Contact From the Past: Finding Franc Palaia

On July 25, 2013, April and I met a third time. We confirmed plans for a retrospective art exhibit to honor Lewis titled A Brother’s Legacy: 4 Decades of Art to be held at Mulberry Art Studio with an opening evening reception 5 PM- 9PM August 1, 2014 and a second reception Friday August 15th from 5PM- 9PM. It sounded so far in the future. Yet I knew we needed the time to prepare the paintings. Once again, April encouraged me to make an attempt to find contacts from Lewis’s past. She suggested I begin writing other artists he shared…
